April 4, 2012 8:00 pm US/Pacific
Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope directed by Morgan Spurlock.
Hollywood, CA -
In a galaxy far, far away, there came a film that gave a glimpse into a world that few have understood until only recently. That film:
"Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope."
The story follows the hopes and dreams of a few individuals' pursuit of the "force" that comes from Comic-Con. Each person
does battle with the "Dark Side" as represented by naysayers, haters, and their own selves. And, as in all wars, there are
the Victorious and the Ones who must try again.
Director Morgan Spurlock invites the outsiders to explore the amazing cultural phenomenon of the "Ultimate Geek Mecca" known
as the San Diego Comic-Con. He has us in attendance with him at SD Comic-Con 2010 and has us following the lives of five attendees:
There is Chuck Rozanski, of Mile-High Comics, who has been at Comic-Con since its
beginning. He has watched as his beloved comic world gets pushed aside by a welcomed/unwelcomed intruder: Hollywood;
Then there's Skip Harvey, whose parents were the genesis of his love of the "Con." Their love and support
propel him forward as he attempts to bring to life his dream of becoming a comic book illustrator by showing his work
to some of the big comic companies;
Eric, an aspiring illustrator, is hoping to impress publishers and land a job;
Holly, costume and creature designer, hopes her creations will win the big prize;
And, James, on a quest to pull off one of the great moments of the film. Without the knowledge
of the love of his life, Se, James' planned marriage proposal is almost foiled until an Icon of the Comic-Con Culture Scene steps in as the hero.
These are just a few of the stories which are the focus of the film. Wonderfully interspersed are
one-on-one interviews with Comic-Con Veterans who have "turned their passions into profession." From the likes of "Simpsons"
creator, Matt Groening; to the "Green Hornet's" Seth Rogan; to Raw Studio's Thomas Jane to the one-and-only Keven Smith
to the Godfather of Comics himself...Stan Lee!
"Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope" is a gem of a movie in that it lithely brings together on the big screen what many attendees of the great
Comic-Cons know: regardless of where you're from, who's your hero, if you're a Star Wars fan or a Trekkie...the camarderie that exists amongst
the fans is larger than most think.
After the masses see this film, there is bound to be an awakening within that will cause them to see "nerds, geeks, and fan boys and girls" in
a very different light. At the very least, it will give them a better understanding that there are many of us out there and this world is
fast becoming ours!
