Pop-Up Stand-Up!
Pasadena, CA - Comedy Central has long been the go-to channel for funny. When word got out that they would be rolling out an all-star stand-up show that would pop-up somewhere around the states; well, that took funny to a whole new level.
Mixing great comedy with a good mystery, Comedy Central's Pop-Up Stand-Up show, sponsored by Corona, brings funny to the people. Each one is FREE (21+) and features all-star comedians performing at a secret location. Before the show, Comedy Central provides daily clues on Facebook and Twitter as to where and when the show will be. As Friends and Followers follow the clues, they have the added fun of trying to guess just where the Pop-Up Stand-Up is going to happen.
So, when the "IN" show learned that the Comedy Central's Pop-Up Stand-Up was coming to our own backyard (and at the Ice House no less), attending the event was a no-brainer. Learning that Carlos Mencia was named as the head liner made for icing on the cake.
Truth be told, taking time out of one's busy work schedule to enjoy a much deserved night out to see a comedian isn't always easy to do; but, when that comedian happens to be Carlos Mencia and the surrounding acts have been scheduled by Comedy Central, well....it couldn't be more perfect, even if we'd planned it!
Frazer Smith made for the perfect emcee. One of the busiest stand-up comedians in the business, he is known to perform regularly at all the major LA comedy clubs. Famous for his one-liners like "Brett Favre had a tough year. Even his text messages got intercepted." , "Tiger Woods is the new spokesman for McDonald's. Their new slogan is 'I'm hittin' that!'"; and, "The Economy is so bad that Jack Nicholson now has been seen going to Clipper games.'" Frazer definitely kept the night rolling!
First up was Momo Rodriquez. Momo is one of those rare people that is able to make light of his weight (no pun intended); and all the while, make a living at it. Watching Momo work the audience with his clever punch lines and hilarious take on life, it was crystal clear why he has fast become the darling of the local Hollywood Comedy Clubs.
Next to deliver the comedic punches was 2006"s "Last-Comic Standing" winner, Josh Blue. Yes, he has Cerebral Palsy; and YES, he knows he has it. His humor is both subtle and outrageous as he engages the audience to drop any stereotypes as they pertain to disabilities "one joke at a time."
Finally, rounding out the night, was Carlos Mencia. In top form, Carlos exercised his beloved amendment: The Right to Free Speech. His act was scheduled to run 45 minutes; but, it ran well over an hour and a half because the audience kept wanting more. His clear and concise observations on politics, society, and religion, as interpreted through his personal experiences, are not for the faint of heart. When it comes to creating laughs, Carlos Mencia looks near and far; for, no one - whether they be foreign or domestic - is safe. This is what makes Mencia's comedy routine so very refreshing.
As it stands, Comedy Central got it right With the Pop-Up Stand-Up show. Filled with humor that broached every topic, delivered by comedians that kept it fearless, the audience found it easy to both laugh with them and at themselves. If Comedy Central continues to engage their audience and provide them with top-notch Stand-Ups, they are bound to have an enduring, comedic exhibition with the Pop-Up Stand-Up Shows.
